Trebinje, June 5, 2025 – In a remarkable demonstration of community spirit and environmental commitment, more than 1,000 residents of Trebinje joined forces in a large-scale city beautification and clean-up campaign organized by the City of Trebinje in cooperation with the Public Institution “Ecology and Safety.” This initiative was held to mark World Environment Day and reflects Trebinje’s ongoing dedication to environmental protection, aligning closely with the principles of the euPOLIS project methodology, which emphasizes sustainable urban development through active citizen engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

A City-Wide Effort for a Greener Future

The campaign mobilized a broad coalition of participants, including municipal services such as the Communal Services, Waterworks, Territorial Fire Unit, Volunteer Fire Departments, Civil Protection of the Trebišnjica Hydroelectric Power Plant, the Public Institution “Ecology and Safety,” the Sports Fishing Society, the Red Cross, educational institutions from primary schools to universities, public enterprises, NGOs, homeowners’ associations, and numerous citizen groups.

Volunteers focused on cleaning key access points to the city, particularly the routes toward Dubrovnik and Herceg Novi, areas previously noted for significant litter accumulation. The City of Trebinje also facilitated free collection and disposal of bulky waste, including old furniture and white goods, encouraging residents to place such items next to containers for easy pick-up.

Raising Awareness and Inspiring Action

In addition to the clean-up activities, employees of “Ecology and Safety” distributed free flower seedlings and informative flyers about the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. These were handed out at a stand in front of the Tourist Organization building in the city center.

Adding a vibrant and hopeful touch to the event, children from the “Naša Radost” kindergarten gathered to create environmental-themed drawings, symbolizing the city’s commitment to educating its youngest citizens about nature conservation.

Commitment to Sustainable Urban Development

Stevan Bekan, Director of the Public Institution “Ecology and Safety,” emphasized the collective responsibility of all citizens:
“Our job is to raise awareness about the need to protect the environment. Every individual can contribute by cleaning the area around their school, building, or home. Even small efforts by many will make our city shine brightly ahead of the tourist season.”

This community-driven approach mirrors the euPOLIS project methodology, which advocates for inclusive, participatory urban governance and sustainable environmental management. By engaging diverse stakeholders—from public institutions to civil society and individual volunteers—Trebinje is fostering a resilient, eco-conscious urban environment.
