Bogotá remains committed to changing its habits and developing joint actions to face the climate crisis. For this reason, with 30 other cities of the world, the city signed the C40 cities urban nature declaration, an opportunity to adapt, create greener and more resilient territories, and mitigate climate change effects.

-Urban and rural societies depend on ecosystems and biodiversity to sustain life and guarantee human well-being. Greening Bogotá means repairing the link between forests, wetlands, and rivers that sheltered our ancestors for centuries. In this way, we are committed to the care and restore urban nature. This will be a vital tool to face climate change effects, that also purifies the air we breathe and acts as a space for reflection, socialization, social cohesion, and enhance the sense of citizens belonging -said the Mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López.
Bogotá is committed to having more green areas such as parks, forests, and trees, while protecting, restoring, and expanding them. It is also making progress in the implementation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems – SUDS, in which permeable spaces can be designed to, among others, absorb water and prevent flooding.
These actions will allow citizens to have access to these green spaces, which is essential for closing social gaps. In addition, it will contribute to having better air quality for the benefit of people’s health.
Short-middle term objectives:
In the short term, Bogotá will work to promote green jobs for a sustainable economic reactivation. Also, the city will seek to identify risks and vulnerabilities related to climate change, establish objectives of the Climate Action Plan, and will work to strengthen governance to mobilize opportunities for financial access.
In the next five years, Bogotá must implement or improve green public spaces in vulnerable areas, develop programs or practices to encourage the citizens’ participation in all sectors of society, and complete the vegetation inventory of the city to create awareness about natures value. These actions will reduce climate change effects.
With Bogotá, there are already 31 cities in the world that sign this declaration: Athens, Austin, Barcelona, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Curitiba, Durban, Freetown, Guadalajara, Haifa, Lima, London, Los Angeles, Medellín, Milan, Mumbai, New Orleans, Paris, Quezon, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Rotterdam, Salvador, Seattle, Stockholm, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, and Toronto.
